This thriving business was not on the streets of Peever but it was very essential
to the well being of the ranchers and farmers who lived in the hills. Being located several miles from a town it
was the place to go for staple needs for the farm and home.
In 1930, Orlando Lohre and Leif Benson built the station in the northwest corner of Section 12, One Road Township.
Orlando’s father & mother owned the property and sold about 3/4 of an acre in the corner for them to build
the station. Orlando’s father and grandfather were both named Ole. The first year it was a service station with
gas pumps outside and a candy case and coal stove inside. In 1931, he built onto the building and started selling
groceries also. After Orlando and Charlotte were married in December 1931, they continued to live in the station.
In the late 1930’s they built on the cream station and garage and Orlando’s father, Ole, became the cream buyer.
U S Highway 81 was the main highway north and south until the late 1940’s when 81 was moved east below the hills.
The station was referred to as “The Eleven Mile Station” because it was 11 miles southwest of Sisseton. The station
was located exactly eight miles straight west of Peever.
Orlando and Charlotte sold the station to his brother Ole (the 4th Ole) and Sophie Lohre in 1946. They moved there
from their farm in Long Hollow Township along with their daughters, Phyllis, Lois and Carol. In 1951 they moved
in a house behind the station and lived there until 1973 when they sold the place to Ray and Caroline Clark. The
Clark’s renamed the station to Clark’s Corner. The business closed and the building was torn down in 1989.
