PEEVER INDEPENDENT SCHOOL

THE ORIGIN OF PEEVER SCHOOL WAS AS LAWRENCE DISTRICT NO. 1 IN 1896 LOCATED ONE MILE EAST OF WHAT IS NOW PEEVER. THEY HAD A SIX MONTH SCHOOL TERM, FOUR MONTHS IN THE FALL WITH EMERY URICH AS TEACHER AND TWO MONTHS IN THE SPTRING WITH WINFRED BROWN AS TEACHER.

IT WAS NOT UNTIL 1901 THAT A NINE MONTH TERM WAS HELD. IT WAS INTERESTING TO KNOW THAT IN 1906 THE SCHOOL HAD $3.50 ON HAND. THE LEVY OF TAXES AT THAT TIME WAS 2 PERCENT ON TAXABLE PROPERTY IN THE TOWNSHIP.

EVENTUALLY THE SCHOOL WAS MOVED INTO TOWN AND LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP BECAME A SEPARATE DISTRICT. THE PROPERTY WAS DIVIDED BETWEEN THE TWO SCHOOLS. PEEVER GOT THE BOOKS AND LAWRENCE THE STOVES. THE OTHER ITEMS WERE DIVIDED EQUALLY.

IN 1904 TWO TEACHERS WERE HIRED, THE TEACHER UPSTAIRS RECEIVED $50.00 A MONTH AND THE ONE DOWNSTAIRS $35.00 A MONTH.

IN 1911 PEEVER BUILT THE BRICK SCHOOL BUILDING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF TOWN. THE FIRST GRADUATING CLASS WAS IN 1914. THEY WERE ROY ANEY, ELEANORE OPITZ, MILLARD RICE AND VIVIAN RICE. THE SCHOOL HAD A FINE CURRICULUM AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. BASKETBALL WAS ALWAYS A FAVORITE OF THE PEEVER COMMUNITY.

BLUE AND GOLD WERE THE SCHOOL COLORS AND PEEVER PANTHERS WAS THE NAME OF THE TEAMS. HOWEVER, THE 1929 YEARBOOK WHICH IS THE EARLIEST ONE WE HAVE SEEN IS NAMED THE "PEEVER CHIEFTAIN."

IN 1970 THE BUILDING WAS DEMOLISHED AND A NEW MODERN SCHOOL BUILT. PEEVER INDEPENDENT WAS NO MORE. IT BECAME A PART OF THE SISSETON PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. IN THE YEAR 2000 THIS BUILDING WAS ALSO DEMOLISHED AND THE PEEVER INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT IS JUST A MEMORY.

SENIOR CLASS POEM 1936

BY JUANITA HALSEIDE

I THINK THE WORLD SHALL NEVER SEE

A SENIOR CLASS AS GREAT AS WE.

WE ENTERED SCHOOL AS FRESHMEN GREEN

AND LEFT THE BEST THAT PEEVER'S SEEN.

BEHOLD! WE'RE ONLY SENIORS NINE.

BUT GOING ON AS THE RIVER RHINE.

LIKE THE WATERS THAT SWIFTLY FLOW

TO GREAT SUCCESS OUR CLASS WILL GO.

MARVIN NEBBEN, THE SENIOR FLIRT

LIKES ANYTHING THAT WEARS A SKIRT.

HE TRIES TO NAME THE GIRLS HE HATES

BUT EVEN MARVIN CAN'T BLUFF FATE.

OUR PRESIDENT WHO IS EARL OWEN

TO THIS GREAT CLASS HAS SURELY SHOWN

HOW SENIORS' BUSINESS SHOULD BE RUN,

AND YET HAVE LOADS AND LOADS OF FUN.

MARVIN BERG THAT SENIOR LAD

TELLS ALL THE GIRLS THAT FLIRTING'S BAD.

BECAUSE HE'S BASHFUL AND DOESN'T DARE,

TO GIVE SUCH ADVICE JUST ISN'T FAIR.

ARNOLD RENVILLE, A MALE SO FAIR

FOR ALL THE GIRLS HE SEEMS TO CARE.

HE'S TALL AND DARK AND HANDSOME AS WELL,

AND FOR HIS CURLS THE GIRLS ALL FELL.

FERDINAND KURRASCH, OUR CLASS'S PEST

NEXT TO BERG HE'S SURELY THE BEST.

HE TAUNTS THE GIRLS TILL THEY GET MAD

THEN AFTERWARD HE FEELS QUITE BAD.

ELDA EIDE, EIGHTEEN AT LAST

THINKS SHE'S GROWING UP VERY FAST.

SOMETIME WE KNOW SHE'LL WANT TO SAY

"I WISH I WERE EIGHTEEN YEARS TODAY."

JOYCE HEGNA, OUR VALEDICTORIAN,

EVELYN BERG, OUR SALUTATORIAN,

BOTH DESERVE HONORS WE KNOW.

TO BOTH OUR CONGRATUALTIONS GO.

JUANITA HALSEIDE, FROM THE HILLS

CAN SURELY FALL AND TAKE THE SPILLS.

SHE THINKS ARITHMETIC IS FUN,

BUT IS ALWAYS GLAD WHEN IT IS DONE.

ULBERG, PRICE AND KVAMMEN THREE

BEST TEACHERS THAT PEEVER WILL EVER SEE

THEY ALL DIG IN AND DO THEIR BEST

AND AS YOU KNOW, WE DO THE REST.
